Driving along the SS 25 Moncenisio main road, you can’t miss Bar Gelateria Penna in Borgone, whose large windows are an invitation to stop off for a taste of the craft delicacies they make with such enthusiasm. The long family tradition, begun in 1986 by Oreste Vair and carried on in 1998 by his wife Celestina Penna, who is still to be found behind the counter. Since 2007, the business has been run by her son Fabio and her daughter Chiara, with her husband Saverio Baritello.
Fabio, a graduate in Food Technologies, oversees the preparation of the ices and semifreddos, using select ingredients. Flavours range from the most classic to the more refined and also come in practical recyclable plastic cartons for home consumption.
Chiara and Saverio produce the cakes, yeasted cakes, chocolate, beignets and biscuits.
Of all their products, we particularly recommend the Pennamisù, a revisitation of the classic tiramisù, and the Valsusino panettone, with marron glacé cubes and PGI Piemonte hazelnut icing. Listing all the ice cream flavours is virtually impossible but especially worthy of mention is the almond and bergamot jam ripple and crushed pistachio nuts. The shop doubles as a bar-café.
