This bakery in Venaus in the Susa Valley was established in 1956 by grandfather Pierino Marzo, who handed it on to his son Mario and his wife Bruna in 1982. Since 2004, it has been run by their son Matteo, who is now the heat and soul of the place. In 2010 he opened a second shop on Via Roma in the very centre of Susa. Most of the flours come from the Canavese district and the Susa Valley itself, though some are of Sicilian origin and are used to make special breads. All the bread is baked from a sourdough starter and the baguettes, the wholemeal with seeds and the varieties made with heirloom grains and mixed cereals are all highly recommended. If you’re lucky enough, you might even find bread with mountain rye or with rye, figs, chestnuts and raisins, a veritable delicacy. The Susa shop also sells a diverse array of focaccias and pizzas, ideal for a tasty lunchtime snack. The range is rounded off by flour and water grissini, breakfast rusks, biscuits and the not-to-be-missed sweet Venaus focaccia, plain, with fruit or with chocolate, while in the festive season the excellent panettone is always popular.
