Given its modern appearance, no one would imagine that Macelleria Testa is one of the oldest butcher’s shops in town. This bright, spacious establishment was opened in 2017, but Paolo and his wife Daniela are actually carrying on the business started by his grandfather Carlo and grandmother Maria when they opened a shop at the Porta Palazzo market in 1927. Paolo’s father Giuseppe and mother Luisa took over in 1950 and ran the shop through the 1960s and 1970s, when they handed the reins to Paolo and Daniela. Before moving to Via Frejus, the couple ran a shop in the Corso Racconigi covered market. Now the fourth generation of the family, Paolo’s daughters Federica and Martina, has joined the business. In their boutique of a shop, they sell not only excellent – which they buy from livestock breeder Luigi Rabino, their regular supplier in Canale, in the province of Cuneo – but also tasty ready meals, fresh pasta, a fine selection of Piedmontese wines, conserves and sauces, and an impressive choice of Piedmontese charcuterie and cheese, including goodies unearthed from local producers.
